Itinerary

A Typical Weekend at Laid Bare

Every retreat develops its own personality, its own vibe. So while we def have a plan, of course, we also leave room for the conversations, ideas, and creative detours that inevitably happen when you put passionate artists together for a weekend.

But here's the general flow:

Friday, October 9 | Arrival

Friday evening is all about settling in. Get checked in, meet everyone, explore the property, grab a drink, and relax. We'll spend the evening getting to know one another, talking photography if people feel like it, answering questions, and simply easing into the weekend.

We don't want you all feeling like they you to hit the ground running five minutes after you arrive.

Saturday, October 10 | Finding the Light

Saturday is dedicated to natural light, but more importantly, learning how to actually see it.

We'll spend the day exploring the property together, looking for beautiful pockets of light that many photographers walk right past. We'll talk about windows, open shade, reflected light, simple reflectors, and even everyday objects that can help shape light. Sometimes a white wall is the perfect modifier. Sometimes it's a doorway. Sometimes it's something as simple as a white towel. The point isn't the tool. The point is understanding what the light is doing and learning to recognize opportunities instead of waiting for perfect conditions.

Later in the day we'll work with models we've invited to Laid Bare, giving everyone plenty of time to shoot while we move around the group offering guidance, suggestions, and probably asking, "Ok so what are you seeing here?" more than once.

Sunday, October 11 | Creating the Light

Sunday shifts from finding light to building it.

We'll introduce strobes, mixed lighting (strobes + natural), and practical techniques for creating images without necessarily relying on elaborate lighting setups. Most photographers aren't carrying 6-7 lights into a client's bedroom or studio, and neither are we. We'll show you how to make one or two lights do far more than most people realize they're capable of.

We'll also spend time blending artificial and natural light, adapting to changing environments, and making creative decisions instead of simply following diagrams. The afternoon wraps up with another guided shoot featuring invited models, giving everyone another opportunity to put the ideas into practice.

The More Important Curriculum

Truthfully, this retreat isn't really "just about lighting". It's about learning to think differently.  Learning to trust your vision, your judgment.

You'll hear us constantly asking questions. "Why this focal length? Why this composition? Why this light? What are you trying to say with this photograph? What do you want people to feel when they see this image?"

Boudoir, or any intimate portraiture, isn't simply about giving clients or collaborators "what they asked for". It's about taking their trust, vulnerability, and excitement, then transforming those things into artwork. Your subjects deserve an experience that feels personal, but they also hired you for your vision, not simply your final product. Learning to balance those two things is one of the defining skills of a great intimate portraiture photographer.

We'll also spend plenty of time talking about personal work. Client sessions are incredibly rewarding, but much of that work is private. Personal projects allow you to experiment, develop your artistic voice, and create images that represent who you are without compromise and that you can share with the world.  Art, after all, should be experienced.

Perhaps the biggest lesson of the weekend is learning to work with what you have. Small rooms. Limited gear. Less-than-perfect conditions. Those aren't obstacles. They're simply creative problems waiting to be solved, and often they're solved by adapting and evolving how you see a photograph before you take it.

We aren't interested in teaching magic tricks or secret formulas because those don't exist. We'd rather help you develop the confidence to walk into almost any space and start asking, "Okay... what can I do here?"

Monday, October 12 | One More Gathering

Before everyone heads home, we'll gather one last time for brunch, a final round of questions, and hopefully a few hugs. By then, you'll have spent an entire weekend surrounded by artists who care deeply about the craft, and our hope is that you leave with more than new techniques. We hope you leave inspired, challenged, and excited to create your best work yet.
